April 26, 2023
The high school auditorium was buzzing with energy as students, teachers, and staff gathered for the Black History Month Assembly on Feb. 17. The audience was captivated by the powerful messages conveyed through the performers’ creative expressions, which included a variety of live and pre-recorded dance and music performances. Those who could not attend in person were invited to join in on the celebration via the Westbury UFSD YouTube livestream.
Assistant Principal Reginald Warren opened the show, stating, “During Black History Month we celebrate the contributions of the African influence in America and throughout the world. The diversity we know and experience today is the result of many who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the world to realize the far-reaching effects of the African diaspora. In this show, we will take you on a cultural journey exploring those roots and expression of traditions.” Sophomores Tehreem Khan and Djurabe Edmond shined as co-emcees of the event. Edmond, who also performed as part of the WHS Percussion Ensemble, said, “It was an honor being selected as emcee again. It was a really interesting experience performing as well as getting to see everything that goes on behind the scenes, and I had a lot of fun. I am looking forward to doing it next year.”
As part of a medley of pre-recorded video clips, science teacher Andy Sanchez stated, “What I find most important about Black History Month is celebrating all of the accomplishments of African Americans throughout American history and empowering the future generations to make history and continue spreading their culture.” Senior Tanisha FilsAime echoed the sentiment, expressing that, “The important thing about Black History Month is celebrating the accomplishments of Black people who came before us to pave the way for those coming after them to have the opportunity that they did.”
One of the highlights of the assembly was a group of students who presented an Egyptian dance featuring costumes adorned in mesmerizing lights and reminding viewers just how deep ancestral roots stretch.
The assembly concluded with a rousing performance that saw all of the entertainers return to the stage in a dance montage highlighting the diversity of talent and cultures represented in the school. The show closed with an eruption of applause and cheers from the audience and a promise of return next year.
