Coco Chanel once said, “A girl should be two things: who and what she wants.” On February 7, 2023 at 10 a.m., Westbury High School was lucky enough to meet the beautiful Miss New Jersey, Daya Burton, who spoke to girls in 9-12th grade about how they can be whatever they want if they set their mind to it.

Burton, who was crowned in 2023, is also a professional hair and makeup artist and owns her own cosmetics company, Glavisio. She’s a mom of four from the Dominican Republic who donates to charities. She started from the bottom but made her way up through school and hard work, a true inspiration to teenage girls all around the world.

At an assembly held in the Little Theater, Burton spoke about the struggles of her childhood and how she overcame them, emphasizing that she didn’t let anything stop her from being someone successful and someone she could be proud of. “I can now say all the sacrifices I made before paid off,” she stated at the invite-only assembly.

We all go through hard times and sometimes just want to give up, but Burton’s take on a hard day/situation is to “transform the bad situation to positive and become stronger.”

Burton is all about empowering women to be their best self: independent, strong, and to follow their dreams because anything is possible. She was also so kind as to give attendees lipstick from her makeup line.
