French Honor Society Immersed in the World of Van Gogh

Sara Holle Nason

On May 12th, 2023, members of the French Honor Society, as well as French 5 Honors students, visited the Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit right here in Westbury with chaperones Larissa Kpana and French Honor Society advisor and French 5H teacher, Sara Holle Nason. During the field trip, students were able to experience Van Gogh’s art in a one-of-a-kind manner, unlike that of a regular museum visit. After snaking their way through a timeline of Van Gogh’s troubled early life, students and chaperones arrived at the main gallery. In this space, hundreds of Van Gogh’s works were projected onto the walls, ceiling, and floor of the 30K square foot area. A musical score that complimented the paintings accompanied the hour-long experience. Many of Van Gogh’s most famous works were highlighted, but other lesser-known pieces were also on view to allow students to expand their understanding of the breadth of his creations. This cultural experience will hopefully be the first of many sponsored by the French Honor Society in an effort to make real-world connections between the French language classroom and pop culture. Special thanks to Ms. Kpana for documenting this unforgettable event in photographs and Marvin Cruz Rivera for helping get the ball rolling so as to share those images with the Westbury community.
