Students of the Nassau Community College Science and Technology Entry Program (NCC STEP) at Westbury High School recently transformed a chemistry lesson into a fun-filled learning experience for elementary students at Drexel Avenue Elementary School. By teaching the young pupils how to make ice cream, high school students simplified complex concepts from the New York State Chemistry Core Curriculum, such as physical and colligative properties, in a way that was both engaging and entertaining. Through this NCC STEP Community Service Activity, high school students not only
shared their knowledge on how to make ice cream, but also inspired a sense of curiosity and scientific exploration among the younger students. This demonstration of mentorship is crucial because it encourages younger students to emulate constructive behaviors, fostering a learning environment where curiosity and enthusiasm for science can thrive. By observing these positive role models, elementary students are more likely to pursue academic interests and engage in beneficial activities, creating a ripple effect of inspiration and encouragement within the community.
