Return of the Homecoming Dance
January 16, 2023
After the Homecoming Game ended, students were excited to dress up and dance the night away at the Westbury High School Homecoming Dance, which took place on Oct. 29 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Upon arrival, students were led into the gym where the dance was held and they were amazed at the transformation. There were tons of decorations and it was clear that a lot of effort was put into everything. “[Setting up] was very hectic but very enjoyable,” said Student Council President Jessica Lara of 12th grade. “It brought us together to accomplish it.” Vice President Gabriela Crespo, also of 12th grade, said that she “thinks it was a success … I feel like a lot of people had fun and we made [a] profit.” Student Council Adviser Naomi Parisette agreed, adding, “After two years of not having a dance it felt amazing to be able to finally put in all the work it takes to pull off an amazing Homecoming Dance for the kids. They deserved it. The Homecoming Dance is the National Student Council’s biggest fundraiser for the year. With profits from this dance, we are able to donate to the Town of North Hempstead’s yearly Veterans Drive where we write holiday cards to our local veterans reminding them they are not forgotten and are appreciated and we put gift cards to local grocery and pharmacies in with their greeting card. The money also goes to senior scholarships yearly [and is used] to support our sister school in Ghana, Africa. We are pleased to be donating $2500 towards another expansion of the school. I’m blessed to work with great kids everywhere who value giving back to the world around them. I’m proud of how hard they work every year on the dance, it is not an easy task decorating the entire gym in five hours. The outcome is well worth it.”
To help with the fundraising effort, small snacks and drinks were sold to the tired dancers on the dance floor. Items offered included Mangonadas, brownies, beverages, and more.
Those in attendance said they had a great time. They danced like their lives depended on it, chatted it up with their friends, and overall enjoyed the night. “The decorations were really nice, they had a big arch with balloons and stars,” said 10th-grader Stalia Edouard. “I took tons of pictures and had such a sensational time that I will never forget.” Many said that if given the option, they would do it over and over again. “At first, I didn’t have high hopes,” claimed freshman Obioma Nwodo. “But after it started, I had lots of fun.”
Once the dance finished, the students were exhausted from all the activities they took part in that day. Those who had stayed for every activity would have spent over 12 hours participating. Though tired, the students were happy with the Homecoming festivities, and look forward to doing it all again next year.
